Why the Theme
of Community Service?
On behalf of the 10,000
Freemasons in Arizona and all the men, women and youth of the Arizona
Masonic Community, I invite you to help us celebrate our birthday with Freemasonry
Salutes Community Service.
125 years ago, Masonry joined
with many other volunteer community service groups as they forged a viable
society in the challenging environs of the US southwest territory.
Recognizing the power of working together, these pioneers built a state that
today remains a powerful magnet for new settlers hoping to build new lives.
Since those early days, the
desire and need for working together sometimes seems to have faded from
memory. The fast paced 21st Century often demands that
individuals adopt an attitude of: just-take-care-of-number-one. Yet,
we know that there are many unsung volunteer groups which continue to
tirelessly work at building a better community.
Our June 1, 2007,
Freemasonry Salutes Community Service celebration, held in Flagstaff’s
Heritage Square, is a public statement. It’s our statement in our
foundational belief that now is the time America should begin its return to
societal balance – a balance between what is good for individuals AND what
is good for the community that sustains them. This balance is a Third
Way - balancing the rights of individuals with the responsibilities
necessary for the maintenance and health of community.
American Volunteer
Community Service Groups have always embodied this Third
Way. They translate individual rights into collective actions
that eventually transform into the governing laws of the nation. In the
incubator of community-based associations, individual rights are expressed
and simultaneously translated for the benefit of the commonweal.
Please accept our invitation
and join with us to recognize and honor the important work performed by all
of our community volunteers.
Most Sincerely,
Rex R. Hutchens, Grand Master of Masons in Arizona
